Parliament: Parliament approves Waqf Bill after lengthy debate

The Waqf Bill was approved after a long debate in Parliament. The debate on the Waqf Bill, which was drafted to protect the properties of Muslim minorities in the country, first began in the Lok Sabha and then went to the Rajya Sabha. These discussions continued amidst arguments, criticisms and counter-criticisms between the ruling party and the opposition. It is noteworthy that this debate in the Rajya Sabha continued even after midnight. Our Parliament has a history of holding long debates on many such bills. The think tank PRS Legislative Research has revealed that a bill was debated in the Lok Sabha for 20 hours in the past.

Waqf Bill: What are the controversies surrounding the Waqf Bill?

The Central Government is going to introduce the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024 in the Lok Sabha today (Wednesday). Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said that eight hours have been allotted for the discussion on this bill and it will be extended if necessary. The bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha in August last year. But due to strong opposition, it was sent to a Joint Parliamentary Committee comprising about 31 MPs from different parties. In fact, the Central Government wants to change the decades-old Waqf Act. The Center says that this new bill is for better utilization of Waqf properties. Those opposing it argue that the Center is trying to acquire Waqf properties in the name of reforms.

Waqf Bill: Waqf Bill before Parliament today

The central government will introduce the Waqf Amendment Bill in Parliament today. The bill will be discussed first in the Lok Sabha and then in the Rajya Sabha. The government aims to make changes in the protection of Waqf properties, transparency and financial practices through amendments in the Waqf Bill. The discussion of this bill will also focus on sensitive issues between religious and social communities in the country.

Demand of opposition parties

Although the government has allotted 8 hours for the debate on the bill, the opposition parties are demanding 12 hours. Major parties like Congress, Trinamool Congress (TMC), Samajwadi Party (SP), MIM and DMK have expressed their concerns against the bill. These parties are arguing that some of the provisions in the bill will create opportunities for injustice in the administration of Waqf properties.
