'Heung-min Son' goal seals 2-1 win over Luton as Tottenham climb to fourth

Tottenham Hotspur "captain" Son Heung-min scored a come-from-behind goal to earn his team three points in the English Premier League (EPL).

Tottenham came from behind to win 2-1 against Luton Town in the 30th round of the 2023-2024 EPL at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, England, on Jan. 31 at 0:00 p.m. ET.

With the win, Spurs, who have 17 wins, five draws and seven losses (56 points), leapfrogged Aston Villa into fourth place.

The two teams have the same number of points and goal difference, but Spurs are one point ahead on goal difference.

Son Heung-min started up front in a 4-2-3-1 formation for the match. He was joined by Timo Werner, James Maddison, and Dejan Kuluczewski in the opposition goal.

It didn't go according to plan, as Spurs conceded in the third minute of the first half. A hit-and-run goal, assisted by Ross Barkley, tied the game.

Spurs struggled to find an equalizer. In the 19th minute, Son Heung-min looked to have equalized.

He beat the keeper on a counterattack and fired a right-footed shot that hit the near post and far post in quick succession.

After a quiet first half, Tottenham came out in the second half and forced an own goal.

Tottenham broke the deadlock six minutes into the second half when Isa Cabore rattled the Luton net after flicking on a low cross from the right flank by substitute Brennan Johnson.

With the score at 1-1, both teams went on the attack in search of the winner.

After a back-and-forth battle, Tottenham had the last laugh. In the 41st minute, Werner's pass from the left flank was crossed by Johnson to an onrushing Son Heung-min.

Son finished with his right foot to take the lead. Son's 15th league goal.

The goal also moved Son into sole possession of fifth place on Tottenham's all-time goalscoring list, having previously shared fifth place with Cliff Jones with 159 goals.

Tottenham manager Enze Postecoglou then decided to tighten things up. In the 43rd minute of the second half, he took Son off and brought on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Postecoglou's plan worked, and the game ended with a 2-1 victory for Spurs.

Woods seeks sixth green jacket in 'Augusta trip'

Another five years have passed. Tiger Woods (49, USA) donned his fifth green jacket at the 2019 Masters and thrilled the world with his comeback drama. In October of that year, he thrilled fans with his 82nd career PGA Tour victory at the Japan Open in Japan. Woods' sixth green jacket is looking increasingly unlikely after a car accident that shattered his leg bones. But Woods is a warrior when it comes to golf. His most Masters victories are six, held by Jack Nicklaus (84, USA).

Woods traveled to Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia, USA, where the Masters will be held on July 31st. He will play a round with Augusta Golf Club President Fred Ridley and Justin Thomas (USA), local media reported. Woods has yet to officially announce his participation in the Masters, which begins on April 11th. His trip to the course is a sign that he will play.

Woods withdrew from last year's Masters midway through and underwent surgery on his right ankle. After a lengthy rehabilitation, he returned to the PGA Tour at the Genesis Invitational in February, but withdrew after two rounds due to a cold. He then withdrew from the Players Championship, which is often referred to as the "fifth major.

There were no upsets.

Hanwha Life Esports advanced to the second round (quarterfinals) of the 2024 League of Legends Champions Korea (LCK) Spring Season Playoffs after easily defeating the Guangdong Freecs 3-0 in the first round of the playoffs at the LCK Arena in Jongno-gu, Seoul on Tuesday. Hanwha Life will play either the regular season's No. 1 Genji or No. 2 T1.

Guangdong, who finished in sixth place, was no obstacle for Hanwha Life, who were in a fierce battle for second place with T1 until the end of the regular season, when they fell short. While they were outclassed by Guangdong's bold strategy in the first two sets, they managed to win after 36 and 29 minutes of battles, respectively, and in the third set, they pushed their opponent from the start and broke Guangdong's nexus in just over 22 minutes.

Hanwha Life had a tremendous 8-1 record in the second round of the regular season, defeating all but Jianji, and will be looking to carry that momentum into the playoffs and head into their second-round matchup with confidence.

The winner of the regular season matchup between fourth-ranked KT and fifth-ranked DPL Kia on April 31 will join Hanwha Life in the second round. The second-round matches will be held on April 3 and 4, and the winners will meet in the third round on April 6 to determine who will advance to the final. The loser of the second-round match will play the loser's bracket on April 7, where the winner will face the loser of the third round on April 13 for a spot in the final. The final will be held at the KSPO Dome in Seoul Olympic Park on the 14th.

'Miracle man' Shin Tae-yong does it again, advances to Indonesia's first-ever round of 16!

It's 'Shin Tae-yong Magic'. Indonesia is in the tournament for the first time.

The Indonesian national soccer team, led by head coach Shin Tae-yong, is 1-2-2 (3 points) in Group D of the Qatar Asian Cup.

The tournament features 24 teams divided into six groups. The first and second place finishers in each group will advance directly to the round of 16. The four best third-place teams in each group will also advance. Indonesia's progression to the round of 16 hinged on the outcome of the final match in Group F. After the final match against Japan, Shin said, "We usually rest the day after the game to recover. We'll take a day off on the 25th and see how the (Group F) match goes, and then we'll decide what to do next. (The possibility of advancing to the round of 16), I can't say anything about that. I think it's the will of the heavens. I have to admit that Japan was a good team. I accept the result, but I have a lot of complaints about the officiating. I applaud our players for doing their best," he said.

The lid is off. Oman and Kyrgyzstan faced off in Group F. The two teams finished 1-1. Indonesia advanced to the round of 16 by finishing third in the group. This was Indonesia's first appearance in the round of 16 in 17 years, since 2007. Indonesia had previously qualified in 1996 and 2000 when the tournament was played in a 12-nation format, and in 2004 and 2007 when it was played in a 16-nation format. They finished 11th in all four tournaments. This is their first time in the tournament.

Shin has been leading Indonesia since 2020. He has also had a stellar run at the helm of Indonesia. In 2020, his first year in charge, they finished runners-up in the AFF competition. They also qualified for the Asian Cup for the first time since 2007.

The challenge was not easy. Indonesia is ranked 146th in the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) as of December 2023. It is the second lowest ranked country in the tournament behind Hong Kong (150th). Shin has always managed to get the best out of the worst situations. The 'Miracle in Kazan' is a prime example. In 2018, Shin made history as South Korea's coach when they beat Germany in the final group stage of the Russian Federation Cup.

This time, it was no different. Indonesia lost to Iraq 1-3 in their first game. However, they bounced back with a 1-0 win over Vietnam. In their final match, they lost to Japan 1-3, but punched their ticket to the Round of 16.

Indonesia's challenge continues Indonesia will face Australia, the top seed in Pool B, on Aug. 28.

'Great Challenge' coach Shin Tae-yong "Motivation for Korea quarterfinals, never give up"

Shin Tae-yong, head coach of the Indonesia national soccer team.

Indonesia will face Australia in the round of 16 of the Qatar Asian Cup at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium in Al Rayyan, Qatar on Nov. 28 (ET).

Speaking at the official pre-match press conference at the Main Media Center (MMC) in Doha, Qatar on Sunday, Shin said, "It is definitely not an easy game for us. Australia is a good team. I think they are the best in Asia in terms of physical condition and power. It will be a tough game, but we will not give up and we will share with the players our passion on the pitch so that they can see that we are working hard and giving our best."

Indonesia is 1-2-2 (3 points) in Group D of the tournament. The tournament featured 24 teams divided into six groups. The first and second place finishers in each group advanced directly to the round of 16. The four best-performing third-place teams in each group also advanced to the tournament. Indonesia advanced to the Round of 16 as the third-place wildcard. This was Indonesia's first appearance in the round of 16 in 17 years, since 2007. Indonesia reached the main draw in 1996 and 2000 when the tournament was a 12-nation format, and in 2004 and 2007 when it was a 16-nation format. They finished 11th in all four tournaments. This is their first time in the tournament.

"We have 26 players, but we're actually rotating 16 to 18 players," Shin said of the upcoming match against Australia. There will be no new players starting. We're playing Australia in the round of 16. It's always nice to come to a press conference, but it's not going to be an easy game. But the ball is round. We'll go in with a never-say-die mentality. I told the players that there can be no giving up. I told them to give it their best shot. I can't really prepare for anything. We have to rotate within the 26 players and create a team tactic. There are no big changes," he said, emphasizing mental strength.

It's certainly not an easy challenge. Indonesia is ranked 146th in the FIFA rankings as of December 2023. It is the second lowest ranked country in the tournament behind Hong Kong (150th). Australia is ranked 25th. However, Shin has always managed to get the best out of the worst situations. The 'Miracle in Kazan' is a prime example. In 2018, the South Korean coach made history when he led his team to defeat Germany in the final group stage of the Russian Federation Cup. What's more, if they win this match, they will face the winner of the Korea-Saudi Arabia match in the quarterfinals. A matchup with South Korea is highly likely.

"It's a big motivation for me," Shin said. But I think it's 3-7 against Australia. Korea is 6-4 against Saudi Arabia. I think Korea will reach the quarterfinals with a much more favorable situation. But they say the ball is round. Personally, I think the best idea is to play one great game in the quarterfinals together."

"I watched the Korea game" Japan's belated relief, 'early' round of 16 Korea-Japan match burden "I don't know football"

Even Japan felt overwhelmed by the 'early' Korea-Japan game. After watching South Korea's game, I could barely contain myself.

Hajime Moriyasu's Japan A soccer team had been on a roll since their strong win at the Qatar Asian Cup. Starting with the match against El Salvador in June last year, they had forgotten how to lose. The team boasted an "anti-Asian" squad, with 20 of its 26 final roster spots filled by Europeans.

The lid was lifted. Japan came back from a 1-2 deficit in their first Group D match against Vietnam to win 4-2. In the second game, they bowed to Iraq 1-2. They were dragged down by their opponents, unable to overturn the deficit. Japan's winning streak also came to an end at 11. Japan saved their pride by defeating Indonesia 3-1 in the final game. They entered the tournament in second place in Group D.

A twist. The second-place finisher in Pool D was drawn against the first-place finisher in Pool E. In Group E was South Korea, led by Jürgen Klinsmann. The final ranking was determined by the outcome of the third match between South Korea and Malaysia. There was talk of a "big match" between Korea and Japan in the round of 16. Klinsmann refused to rule it out.

It was a straw man argument. South Korea's pride was well and truly crushed in their final match against Malaysia. They couldn't hold on to a 1-0 lead and lost 1-2. At that point, South Korea's ranking dropped to third place. South Korea fought back to 3-2, but couldn't hold on to the lead. They conceded a late equalizer in stoppage time and the game ended 3-3. South Korea finished the tournament in second place. They will face Group F winner Saudi Arabia in the round of 16.

The possibility of an "early" matchup between South Korea and Japan has been erased. "As it turns out, it's a good thing we won't meet Korea in the round of 16," said a Japanese journalist who covered the match between Korea and Malaysia.

Japanese players are also relieved to have avoided a Korea-Japan matchup. As reported by Japanese soccer publication Soccer Digest, Junya Ito (Stade de Reims) said, "I watched the mode match. I felt that soccer is really unknowable until the end. I thought Korea would come up. I thought I would save (the play) for next time after watching the Korean game properly. Now that the other side (Bahrain) is up, I think we need to prepare well."
