The San Diego Padres' Ha-seong Kim reached base on a walk but was unable to get a hit for the second straight game.

Kim went 0-for-2 with one walk and one strikeout while starting at shortstop in the No. 7 spot against the New York Mets at Citi Field in Queens, N.Y., on Friday. His batting average dropped slightly to 2.2 on the season.

The Mets started left-hander Sean Manaea. Kim faced Manaea in the second inning and drew a foul-tip grounder to first base. Kim showed off his initiative and took the first three pitches. But after three pitches, he let two strikes fly. He was forced to retire on a foul tip on a 77.3 mph sweeper six pitches outside on a full count.

With the bases loaded in the fifth, he took advantage of a favorable three-pitch, one-strike count and swung at an 84.6 mph slider down the middle on the fifth pitch, but missed. He retired on a fly ball to right field.

In the top of the seventh, he faced left-hander Jake Dickman with runners on first and second. He was facing a one-pitch, two-strike count against Dickman. But he calmly picked the ball and walked on an eight-pitch count. He had runners on first and second with two outs. Jackson Merrill followed with a fly ball to left field to end the threat. The game started about an hour late due to rain. San Diego lost 1-2, snapping a three-game winning streak. The Padres are now 37-36 on the season.

San Diego struck first in the bottom of the third inning. A walk to Jeff McNeil and a single to Brandon Nimmo put runners on first and second with one out, and J.D. Martinez followed with a leadoff double.

But they got a run back in the top of the fifth with the bases loaded. Jackson Merrill hit a solo home run to right-center field off Manaea to make it 1-2.

But the offense couldn't get any closer. San Diego starter Matt Waldron took the loss despite throwing 98 pitches - 42 knuckleballs, 23 sweepers, 17 four-seamers and 16 sinkers - in 7 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

San Diego had a chance in the top of the ninth when leadoff hitter Jurickson Profar singled to right and stole second. But Manny Machado struck out, Donovan Solano grounded to the second baseman and Jake Cronenweth grounded out. That was the last chance for Kim.

The reaction to Roki Sasaki's second missed start of the season due to injury has been cold.

The Chiba Lotte Marines' "monster pitcher" Roki Sasaki has been sidelined by injury yet again. After pitching seven innings of one-run ball against the SoftBank Hawks on May 24, Sasaki was removed from the roster on May 28, citing delayed recovery from upper-body fatigue. He returned on June 8 against the Hiroshima Toyokafu to earn his fifth win of the season with six innings of one-run ball, but felt fatigue in the same area before his start against the Junichi Dragons on June 15. Sasaki continued to train as usual, including playing catch before his start on the 12th.

On the 13th, the Chiba Lotte team removed Sasaki from the roster. This time, the symptoms are the same. Manager Masato Yoshii told the Japanese press, "This time, he said it was difficult to pitch after six days of rest. If he can't pitch after six days of rest, he won't be able to pitch," he said bitterly, adding, "I can't say when he will return. It depends on how the trainer and Loki (Sasaki) decide," he lamented.

Sasaki was born in 2001 and is 23 years old, but he is a player of great ability, which sometimes leads to controversy over his club's overprotection. It's a special treatment for a player who is only in his fourth year as a professional.

There have been some negative comments from Chiba Rode fans and the Japanese media. "I feel like Sasaki doesn't want to pitch as much in Japan anymore, and I wonder if that's why the club isn't pushing him harder," "He can do whatever he wants now," and "I think his heart is already in the U.S." are some of the comments Chiba Rode fans have made in response to reports about Sasaki. The Chivarodas are in third place in the Pacific League as of Thursday. They are 10 games behind the first-place SoftBank Hawks and two games behind the second-place Nippon Ham Fighters, so they can still make a leap. However, the team has lost a bit of momentum as "Ace" Sasaki has twice withdrawn due to muscle fatigue.

For now, the Los Angeles Dodgers, who have been the most aggressive in pursuing Sasaki, don't seem to mind. A major league scout told Nikkan Gendai, "The Dodgers' stance is that it doesn't matter if he has a long gap between starts. Instead, they want to make sure they get results in the games they pitch. The Dodgers are a team that has that kind of power."

Sean Anderson (29), had a disastrous comeback in his first major league start.

Anderson took the mound against the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C., on Aug. 15 (KST), giving up seven runs on 10 hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in two innings of work, but was unable to prevent his team from losing 1-8. It was his first start since August 8, 2019, and his first start in nearly five years, but it was a blowout. His season ERA soared to 15.19.

Anderson was in trouble in the first two innings. In the first inning, he gave up a leadoff double to CJ Abrams. However, he was thrown out at third, leaving the bases loaded. Lane Thomas followed with another single to right, and a wild pitch put runners on first and second. But Jesse Winker struck out looking and Eddie Rosario flied out to center field to get out of the inning.

In the top of the second, Joey Meneses grounded out to shortstop. Luis Garcia Jr. gave up a single to left, but induced Keyvers Lewis to fly out to right and Nick Senzel to ground out to shortstop to end the inning.

But they couldn't survive the third inning. In the third, Jacob Young singled to center and CJ Abrams doubled to center field. With runners on first and second, Lane Thomas hit a three-run homer to left field.

Jesse Winker singled to shortstop and Eddie Rosario doubled to center field to put runners on second and third again. He then gave up an RBI double to Joey Meneses. Luis Garcia followed with another single to left to put runners on first and second with no outs.

Anderson couldn't take it anymore and was taken off the mound. In his place, Huasca Brazovan made matters worse, extending Anderson's run total. He got the first batter he faced, Keyvers Lewis, to fly out to left field, but gave up a walk to Nick Senzel to load the bases.

Jacob Young, who came back to the plate to pinch-hit, struck out to load the bases, but CJ Abrams hit a two-run double to left to plate both Anderson runners. Anderson's lead grew to seven runs.

Anderson was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the third round of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft. He was traded to the San Francisco Giants in 2017 and made his major league debut in 2019. Through 2022, he has appeared in 28 big league games (16 starts) with the Minnesota Twins, Baltimore Orioles, and Toronto Blue Jays, compiling a 3-5 record with two saves and a 5.44 ERA in 96 innings.

Last year, he tried his hand at a new stage in the KBO with the KIA Tigers, but was released after going 4-7 with a 3.76 ERA in 14 games.

This year, he signed a minor league contract with the Texas Rangers and returned to the major leagues. After pitching two games, he was traded to the Miami Marlins in a cash deal.

Washington Nationals outfielder Lane Thomas, 29, was the subject of a bizarre ejection.

Thomas was ejected from the game against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan, USA, on April 14 after striking out looking in the third inning of the sixth game from the second spot in the lineup.

With the count 2-2, Detroit right-hander Casey Mays' five-pitch, 96-mile-per-hour (154.5-kilometer) four-seam fastball was high and outside. The pitch was just inside the corner of the strike zone and umpire Emil Jimenez called it a strike. After the strikeout, Thomas glanced in umpire Jimenez's direction but didn't say anything.

But when umpire Jimenez immediately called him out, Thomas was furious. "What? You're ejecting me? I wasn't looking at you, I was looking at the ball," Thomas pleaded, but it didn't change the fact that he was already ejected. The situation ended when Washington head coach Dave Martinez came out and appealed to referee Jimenez to calm Thomas down.

"I obviously didn't say anything to the referee," Thomas said after the game, according to The Washington Post. It's disappointing," Thomas said after the game. The referee who ejected Thomas, Jimenez, is a young referee in his second year, but he has already stirred up controversy with his authoritarian demeanor.

The New York Post wrote: "Thomas was completely stunned by the bizarre ejection. "The bar for ejections seems to be getting lower and lower," said the New York Post, "ironically in a season in which the most controversial referee, Angel Hernandez, retired after 33 years.

On April 23, New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone was ejected from the game for something he didn't say in the first inning. After Oakland Athletics slugger Esther Lewis was hit on the right foot by a four-pitch fastball in the first inning, Boone returned to the first base dugout to question whether or not he should check his swing, but was suddenly ordered out after the first pitch of the next at-bat. Umpire Hunter Wendelstedt, who mistook Boone's complaints as coming from the crowd above the dugout, called him out without even checking with him.

"I didn't say anything. The person who said it is up in the dugout," but umpire Wendelstedt replied, "I don't care who said it. You're ejected. You're responsible for everything that happened in the Yankees dugout." Wendelstedt's response was controversial because of his high-handed demeanor.

On May 5, Yankees captain and home run king Aaron Boone entered the dugout talking to himself after striking out swinging in the seventh inning in Detroit and was immediately ejected by umpire Ryan Blackney. "This is the first time this has happened to me," said Jersey, who was ejected for the first time in his career. I'm upset that it happened in a close game," he said.

Professional soccer's K League 1 Gwangju FC has issued a statement in response to violations of the K League's financial stability system introduced by the Korea Professional Football Association.

"As a civic club, Gwangju has achieved successive achievements such as winning the 'Hana Bank K League 2 2022', the 'Hana Bank K League 1 2023' Final A, and advancing to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League Elite (ACLE) in the 2024-2025 season," the club said on its website on Friday, explaining that its club and player operating expenses have increased by 152 percent in two years.

Gwangju said club and player operating expenses increased 36% year-on-year in 2023 and 84% year-on-year this year.

"The federation's finance committee is concerned about the financial situation of the K League, but our club is pushing to become a prestigious club with a new spirit of challenge, so it is inevitable that the budget will increase," he said.

"We explained our business activities to the Finance Committee in February, and in consultation with the players, we have already completed the composition of the squad (from 33 to 39 players) in preparation for the ACLE," he added.

"The club is currently working on various measures to stabilize its finances and is doing its best to continue to operate the club," said Gwangju, asking for the fans' interest and cooperation.

The Federation Finance Committee was established under the K League Financial Stabilization System, which was introduced last year.

The financial stability system includes the following: ▲ Each club must achieve a break-even point every year ▲ Player expenses cannot exceed 70 percent of total revenue ▲ In the case of a fully capitalized club, the club must submit an improvement plan and resolve it within the deadline set by the federation.

"In January, the finance committee reviewed this year's budgets of 25 professional soccer clubs, and only Gwangju was rejected without approval," a league official explained to News Corp. on Jan. 12, adding, "The club submitted a budget with too much expected income for this year and was not approved."

The federation asked the club to resubmit a more realistic budget, but the revised proposal was also rejected, he added.

If Gwangju fails to meet its projected income before the summer transfer window opens on July 20, it will not be able to register any new players, except for those returning from military service or loans.

'Heung-min Son' goal seals 2-1 win over Luton as Tottenham climb to fourth

Tottenham Hotspur "captain" Son Heung-min scored a come-from-behind goal to earn his team three points in the English Premier League (EPL).

Tottenham came from behind to win 2-1 against Luton Town in the 30th round of the 2023-2024 EPL at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, England, on Jan. 31 at 0:00 p.m. ET.

With the win, Spurs, who have 17 wins, five draws and seven losses (56 points), leapfrogged Aston Villa into fourth place.

The two teams have the same number of points and goal difference, but Spurs are one point ahead on goal difference.

Son Heung-min started up front in a 4-2-3-1 formation for the match. He was joined by Timo Werner, James Maddison, and Dejan Kuluczewski in the opposition goal.

It didn't go according to plan, as Spurs conceded in the third minute of the first half. A hit-and-run goal, assisted by Ross Barkley, tied the game.

Spurs struggled to find an equalizer. In the 19th minute, Son Heung-min looked to have equalized.

He beat the keeper on a counterattack and fired a right-footed shot that hit the near post and far post in quick succession.

After a quiet first half, Tottenham came out in the second half and forced an own goal.

Tottenham broke the deadlock six minutes into the second half when Isa Cabore rattled the Luton net after flicking on a low cross from the right flank by substitute Brennan Johnson.

With the score at 1-1, both teams went on the attack in search of the winner.

After a back-and-forth battle, Tottenham had the last laugh. In the 41st minute, Werner's pass from the left flank was crossed by Johnson to an onrushing Son Heung-min.

Son finished with his right foot to take the lead. Son's 15th league goal.

The goal also moved Son into sole possession of fifth place on Tottenham's all-time goalscoring list, having previously shared fifth place with Cliff Jones with 159 goals.

Tottenham manager Enze Postecoglou then decided to tighten things up. In the 43rd minute of the second half, he took Son off and brought on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Postecoglou's plan worked, and the game ended with a 2-1 victory for Spurs.

Woods seeks sixth green jacket in 'Augusta trip'

Another five years have passed. Tiger Woods (49, USA) donned his fifth green jacket at the 2019 Masters and thrilled the world with his comeback drama. In October of that year, he thrilled fans with his 82nd career PGA Tour victory at the Japan Open in Japan. Woods' sixth green jacket is looking increasingly unlikely after a car accident that shattered his leg bones. But Woods is a warrior when it comes to golf. His most Masters victories are six, held by Jack Nicklaus (84, USA).

Woods traveled to Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia, USA, where the Masters will be held on July 31st. He will play a round with Augusta Golf Club President Fred Ridley and Justin Thomas (USA), local media reported. Woods has yet to officially announce his participation in the Masters, which begins on April 11th. His trip to the course is a sign that he will play.

Woods withdrew from last year's Masters midway through and underwent surgery on his right ankle. After a lengthy rehabilitation, he returned to the PGA Tour at the Genesis Invitational in February, but withdrew after two rounds due to a cold. He then withdrew from the Players Championship, which is often referred to as the "fifth major.

There were no upsets.

Hanwha Life Esports advanced to the second round (quarterfinals) of the 2024 League of Legends Champions Korea (LCK) Spring Season Playoffs after easily defeating the Guangdong Freecs 3-0 in the first round of the playoffs at the LCK Arena in Jongno-gu, Seoul on Tuesday. Hanwha Life will play either the regular season's No. 1 Genji or No. 2 T1.

Guangdong, who finished in sixth place, was no obstacle for Hanwha Life, who were in a fierce battle for second place with T1 until the end of the regular season, when they fell short. While they were outclassed by Guangdong's bold strategy in the first two sets, they managed to win after 36 and 29 minutes of battles, respectively, and in the third set, they pushed their opponent from the start and broke Guangdong's nexus in just over 22 minutes.

Hanwha Life had a tremendous 8-1 record in the second round of the regular season, defeating all but Jianji, and will be looking to carry that momentum into the playoffs and head into their second-round matchup with confidence.

The winner of the regular season matchup between fourth-ranked KT and fifth-ranked DPL Kia on April 31 will join Hanwha Life in the second round. The second-round matches will be held on April 3 and 4, and the winners will meet in the third round on April 6 to determine who will advance to the final. 'Miracle man' Shin Tae-yong does it again, advances to Indonesia's first-ever round of 16!

It's 'Shin Tae-yong Magic'. Indonesia is in the tournament for the first time.

The Indonesian national soccer team, led by head coach Shin Tae-yong, is 1-2-2 (3 points) in Group D of the Qatar Asian Cup.

The tournament features 24 teams divided into six groups. The first and second place finishers in each group will advance directly to the round of 16. The four best third-place teams in each group will also advance. Indonesia's progression to the round of 16 hinged on the outcome of the final match in Group F. After the final match against Japan, Shin said, "We usually rest the day after the game to recover. We'll take a day off on the 25th and see how the (Group F) match goes, and then we'll decide what to do next. (The possibility of advancing to the round of 16), I can't say anything about that. I think it's the will of the heavens. I have to admit that Japan was a good team. I accept the result, but I have a lot of complaints about the officiating. I applaud our players for doing their best," he said.

The lid is off. Oman and Kyrgyzstan faced off in Group F. The two teams finished 1-1. Indonesia advanced to the round of 16 by finishing third in the group. This was Indonesia's first appearance in the round of 16 in 17 years, since 2007. Indonesia had previously qualified in 1996 and 2000 when the tournament was played in a 12-nation format, and in 2004 and 2007 when it was played in a 16-nation format. They finished 11th in all four tournaments. This is their first time in the tournament.

Shin has been leading Indonesia since 2020. He has also had a stellar run at the helm of Indonesia. In 2020, his first year in charge, they finished runners-up in the AFF competition. They also qualified for the Asian Cup for the first time since 2007.

The challenge was not easy. Indonesia is ranked 146th in the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) as of December 2023. It is the second lowest ranked country in the tournament behind Hong Kong (150th). Shin has always managed to get the best out of the worst situations. The 'Miracle in Kazan' is a prime example. In 2018, Shin made history as South Korea's coach when they beat Germany in the final group stage of the Russian Federation Cup.

This time, it was no different. Indonesia lost to Iraq 1-3 in their first game. However, they bounced back with a 1-0 win over Vietnam. In their final match, they lost to Japan 1-3, but punched their ticket to the Round of 16.

Indonesia's challenge continues Indonesia will face Australia, the top seed in Pool B, on Aug. 28.

'Great Challenge' coach Shin Tae-yong "Motivation for Korea quarterfinals, never give up"

Shin Tae-yong, head coach of the Indonesia national soccer team.

Indonesia will face Australia in the round of 16 of the Qatar Asian Cup at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium in Al Rayyan, Qatar on Nov. 28 (ET).

Speaking at the official pre-match press conference at the Main Media Center (MMC) in Doha, Qatar on Sunday, Shin said, "It is definitely not an easy game for us. Australia is a good team. I think they are the best in Asia in terms of physical condition and power. It will be a tough game, but we will not give up and we will share with the players our passion on the pitch so that they can see that we are working hard and giving our best."

Indonesia is 1-2-2 (3 points) in Group D of the tournament. The tournament featured 24 teams divided into six groups. The first and second place finishers in each group advanced directly to the round of 16. The four best-performing third-place teams in each group also advanced to the tournament. Indonesia advanced to the Round of 16 as the third-place wildcard. This was Indonesia's first appearance in the round of 16 in 17 years, since 2007. Indonesia reached the main draw in 1996 and 2000 when the tournament was a 12-nation format, and in 2004 and 2007 when it was a 16-nation format. They finished 11th in all four tournaments. This is their first time in the tournament.

"We have 26 players, but we're actually rotating 16 to 18 players," Shin said of the upcoming match against Australia. There will be no new players starting. We're playing Australia in the round of 16. It's always nice to come to a press conference, but it's not going to be an easy game. But the ball is round. We'll go in with a never-say-die mentality. I told the players that there can be no giving up. I told them to give it their best shot. I can't really prepare for anything. We have to rotate within the 26 players and create a team tactic. There are no big changes," he said, emphasizing mental strength.

It's certainly not an easy challenge. Indonesia is ranked 146th in the FIFA rankings as of December 2023. It is the second lowest ranked country in the tournament behind Hong Kong (150th). Australia is ranked 25th. However, Shin has always managed to get the best out of the worst situations. The 'Miracle in Kazan' is a prime example. In 2018, the South Korean coach made history when he led his team to defeat Germany in the final group stage of the Russian Federation Cup. What's more, if they win this match, they will face the winner of the Korea-Saudi Arabia match in the quarterfinals. A matchup with South Korea is highly likely.

"It's a big motivation for me," Shin said. But I think it's 3-7 against Australia. Korea is 6-4 against Saudi Arabia. I think Korea will reach the quarterfinals with a much more favorable situation. But they say the ball is round. Personally, I think the best idea is to play one great game in the quarterfinals together."

"I watched the Korea game" Japan's belated relief, 'early' round of 16 Korea-Japan match burden "I don't know football"

Even Japan felt overwhelmed by the 'early' Korea-Japan game. After watching South Korea's game, I could barely contain myself.

Hajime Moriyasu's Japan A soccer team had been on a roll since their strong win at the Qatar Asian Cup. Starting with the match against El Salvador in June last year, they had forgotten how to lose. The team boasted an "anti-Asian" squad, with 20 of its 26 final roster spots filled by Europeans.

The lid was lifted. Japan came back from a 1-2 deficit in their first Group D match against Vietnam to win 4-2. In the second game, they bowed to Iraq 1-2. They were dragged down by their opponents, unable to overturn the deficit. Japan's winning streak also came to an end at 11. Japan saved their pride by defeating Indonesia 3-1 in the final game. They entered the tournament in second place in Group D.

A twist. The second-place finisher in Pool D was drawn against the first-place finisher in Pool E. In Group E was South Korea, led by Jürgen Klinsmann. The final ranking was determined by the outcome of the third match between South Korea and Malaysia. There was talk of a "big match" between Korea and Japan in the round of 16. Klinsmann refused to rule it out.

It was a straw man argument. South Korea's pride was well and truly crushed in their final match against Malaysia. They couldn't hold on to a 1-0 lead and lost 1-2. At that point, South Korea's ranking dropped to third place. South Korea fought back to 3-2, but couldn't hold on to the lead. They conceded a late equalizer in stoppage time and the game ended 3-3. South Korea finished the tournament in second place. They will face Group F winner Saudi Arabia in the round of 16.

The possibility of an "early" matchup between South Korea and Japan has been erased. "As it turns out, it's a good thing we won't meet Korea in the round of 16," said a Japanese journalist who covered the match between Korea and Malaysia.

Japanese players are also relieved to have avoided a Korea-Japan matchup. As reported by Japanese soccer publication Soccer Digest, Junya Ito (Stade de Reims) said, "I watched the mode match. I felt that soccer is really unknowable until the end. I thought Korea would come up. I thought I would save (the play) for next time after watching the Korean game properly. Now that the other side (Bahrain) is up, I think we need to prepare well."

Suwon FC signs multi-position hardworker Jung Seung-won

Suwon FC is pleased to announce the signing of 'Hardworker' Jung Seung-won.

Having made his professional debut with Daegu FC in the 2017 season and playing for Suwon Samsung since 2022, Jeong is already a league-level player with 167 career appearances (8 goals) in the K League.

His biggest weapon is his work rate and multi-positional ability, which allows him to provide energy in a variety of positions, from front to back, center to flank.

He and Suwon FC head coach Kim Eun-joong worked together as coaches and players on the Tokyo 2020 Olympic team, so the synergy between the two is expected to be strong in the 2024 season.

With the addition of the versatile Jung Seung-won, Suwon FC has added a reinforcement that will raise the team's energy level even higher.

"It's an honor to meet Coach Kim Eun-joong," said Jung, "and we will work hard to reach the Final A in the 2024 season."
