CEO of AI Dubber Papercup Says Much of the Team is Moving to Scale AI

"AI dubbing company Papercup co-founder and CEO, Jesse Shemen, announced via a post on LinkedIn dated May 15, 2025, that “a large portion of the Papercup team is joining Scale AI, a company I’ve long admired for shaping the future of AI across both public and enterprise sectors.”
While both Shemen and AI data annotation giant Scale AI are seemingly keeping details of their merger under wraps, Shemen also said in his post that “It is a bittersweet moment. While it’s difficult to see Papercup take a different path than I had imagined, I’m deeply proud of what we accomplished.” He is joining Scale himself, but it is not known what his role will be.

Will YouTube Succeed with AI Translated Dubbing?

"If anyone had heard in the 2010s the prediction that YouTube VP, Amjad Hanif, is quoted as saying in a Bloomberg article about AI dubbing, skepticism would have likely reigned on social media: in five years, “every video uploaded to YouTube could be dubbed automatically into every spoken language.”
In 2025, this is more plausible, so no great skepticism, no millions of exploding-head emojis. Well, perhaps not every spoken language. But at the dizzying rate language AI is advancing (just look at what HeyGen’s Avatar or ElevenLabs’ Actor Mode can do), AI dubbing is set to improve and dominate over human dubbing a lot sooner than 2030.

Denmark Says Post-Editing Is Not Translation

"A passage taken from a statement (in Danish) published in April 2025 by the Danish Translators’ Association and the Danish Authors’ Society says that “some people have wrongly received public lending money for books where they were listed as translators. In these instances, no real translation work was done; instead, they only edited text that was already translated by a machine.”
According to the European Council of Literary Translators Associations (CEATL), the two associations, along with the Danish Publishers Association, have reached an industry-wide agreement regarding crediting practices for translators and AI translation post-editors.

How OpenAI’s O3-Mini and DeepSeek-R1 Are Shaping the Future of AI Translation Evaluation?

Can reasoning-enabled LLMs outperform traditional models in AI translation evaluation? A recent Slator article explores how Alibaba’s advancements in large reasoning models are driving innovation in the language tech space. Now, a new study by researchers from the University of Mannheim and the University of Technology Nuremberg dives deeper—testing whether next-gen models like OpenAI’s O3-Mini and DeepSeek-R1 offer superior capabilities in assessing machine translation quality.
Researchers point out: “Most prior work focuses on non-reasoning LLMs. This study asks—do reasoning-powered LLMs truly evaluate translations better?”

Cybersecurity Firm Points to Risks in NVIDIA’s Translation AI and Speech Microservices

"Cybersecurity consultancy firm Trend Micro’s research identified security vulnerabilities in NVIDIA Riva API endpoints. NVIDIA Riva is a set of GPU-accelerated features for developers that NVIDIA describes as “multilingual speech and translation microservices for building fully customizable, real-time conversational AI pipelines” for cloud deployment.
The features, launched in 2024, enabling automatic speech recognition (ASR), text-to-speech (TTS), and AI translation, can be used in multiple scenarios and operate through the integration of large language models (LLMs) and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG).

Alibaba and Meta Face Off in Simultaneous AI Translation

"Two recent research papers — one from a team at Alibaba and Xiamen University, the other from Meta AI —- proposed different ways to improve simultaneous AI translation (SiMT): by adapting large language models (LLMs) for real-time use, and by extending translation systems with a lightweight streaming module.
The Alibaba and Xiamen University researchers introduced a method called EAST (Efficient and Adaptive Simultaneous Translation), which enables LLMs to handle streaming input.
