Another wonderful new members’ group this evening who have shared in learning and laughing as we unite in our mission “to Know Christ and to Make Christ Known.”

In Capernaum where we experienced the White Synagogue built upon the ruins of the synagogue of Jesus’ time. I wonder if St. Peter, shown here looking powerful and holding the keys (with which to bind and loose here on earth) ever wondered, as I do, if a pair of angels stood above him with a size 17 neck millstone (as pictured) every time he preached or taught? As I shared with the group at this site, I’m reminded of the scribal note in the margin of an early centuries manuscript which I’ve adapted: “ Lord, to those who have listened grant wisdom and to him who has spoken grant mercy. Amen.”

Since the 1300’s the Razzouk family has been tattooing pilgrims in Jerusalem. They still use many of the original stamps hand carved over the years with depictions of crosses, St. George slaying the dragon, the crucifixion or resurrection of Christ, among many other early Christian symbols. I joined the countless faithful who have taken the cross of Jerusalem as a reminder of their experience in the Holy Land and their connection to the broader Church around the world and throughout history. It was made even more meaningful by joining with five of our other pilgrims from Hope in bearing this mark of devotion.

After a day of contemplation at Jericho, Bethany, and Qumran, it was time for a little relaxation at the Dead Sea. Met a lovely young man from London who needed someone to watch his stuff while he went swimming. He’s a native of London lived in Dubai for the last decade and a fellow Man United fan (Red Devils forever!!!). MJ and I had a blast sharing sand and sun with him and refreshment with our fellow pilgrims.

The Garden Tomb was the crowning moment of this trip for me. This has been a transformative and restorative journey for me. Thank you to all of those who took on extra work to enable me to come without worrying about the “what ifs” while I was away. Domine Inimus MMXXIII
