'Great Challenge' coach Shin Tae-yong "Motivation for Korea quarterfinals, never give up"
Shin Tae-yong, head coach of the Indonesia national soccer team.
Indonesia will face Australia in the round of 16 of the Qatar Asian Cup at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium in Al Rayyan, Qatar on Nov. 28 (ET).
Speaking at the official pre-match press conference at the Main Media Center (MMC) in Doha, Qatar on Sunday, Shin said, "It is definitely not an easy game for us. Australia is a good team. I think they are the best in Asia in terms of physical condition and power. It will be a tough game, but we will not give up and we will share with the players our passion on the pitch so that they can see that we are working hard and giving our best."
Indonesia is 1-2-2 (3 points) in Group D of the tournament. The tournament featured 24 teams divided into six groups. The first and second place finishers in each group advanced directly to the round of 16. The four best-performing third-place teams in each group also advanced to the tournament. Indonesia advanced to the Round of 16 as the third-place wildcard. This was Indonesia's first appearance in the round of 16 in 17 years, since 2007. Indonesia reached the main draw in 1996 and 2000 when the tournament was a 12-nation format, and in 2004 and 2007 when it was a 16-nation format. They finished 11th in all four tournaments. This is their first time in the tournament.
"We have 26 players, but we're actually rotating 16 to 18 players," Shin said of the upcoming match against Australia. There will be no new players starting. We're playing Australia in the round of 16. It's always nice to come to a press conference, but it's not going to be an easy game. But the ball is round. We'll go in with a never-say-die mentality. I told the players that there can be no giving up. I told them to give it their best shot. I can't really prepare for anything. We have to rotate within the 26 players and create a team tactic. There are no big changes," he said, emphasizing mental strength.
It's certainly not an easy challenge. Indonesia is ranked 146th in the FIFA rankings as of December 2023. It is the second lowest ranked country in the tournament behind Hong Kong (150th). Australia is ranked 25th. However, Shin has always managed to get the best out of the worst situations. The 'Miracle in Kazan' is a prime example. In 2018, the South Korean coach made history when he led his team to defeat Germany in the final group stage of the Russian Federation Cup. What's more, if they win this match, they will face the winner of the Korea-Saudi Arabia match in the quarterfinals. A matchup with South Korea is highly likely.
"It's a big motivation for me," Shin said. But I think it's 3-7 against Australia. Korea is 6-4 against Saudi Arabia. I think Korea will reach the quarterfinals with a much more favorable situation. But they say the ball is round. Personally, I think the best idea is to play one great game in the quarterfinals together."
