Myocardial Infarction: Understanding the Most Common Type of Heart Attack

Coronary heart disease, also called coronary artery disease, is the most common cause of myocardial infarctions. coronary artery disease develops when the arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle (the coronary arteries) become hardened and narrowed due to atherosclerosis.

Myocardial Infarction plaque in a coronary artery ruptures or breaks open, platelets (blood cell fragments) and other substances cause a blood clot to form on the surface of the plaque. This blood clot may then reduce or block blood flow through the coronary artery. If blood flow to part of the heart muscle is reduced sufficiently for long enough, the portion of heart muscle supplied by that vessel begins to die and causes a myocardial infarction.

Cold Weather Linked to Increased Heart Attack Risk, Study Finds

A new study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC) has found a significant increase in hospital admissions for heart attacks following exposure to lower air temperatures and cold spells.

The findings, presented at the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Congress 2024, suggest a delayed effect, with the highest risk occurring two to six days after exposure to cold weather.

?Understanding Ischemic Cardiomyopathy

Ischemic cardiomyopathy is a critical cardiovascular condition that arises from compromised blood flow to the heart muscle, leading to impaired heart function.

What is Cardiomyopathy?
Cardiomyopathy refers to diseases of the heart muscle where the heart becomes enlarged, thickened, or stiffened, affecting its ability to pump blood effectively.

Causes of Ischemic Cardiomyopathy
1. Atherosclerosis and Coronary Artery Disease (CAD)
2. Myocardial Infarction (Heart Attack) and its Consequences
3. Chronic Ischemic Heart Disease
