Innovative Study Reveals New Insights into Lupus-Related Heart Damage
Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death among patients with lupus, an autoimmune disorder characterized by the immune system attacking the body’s own tissues and organs.
This includes the heart, blood vessels, lungs, joints, brain, and skin. Lupus myocarditis, or inflammation of the heart muscle, can severely disrupt heart rhythm and function.

Myocardial Infarction: Understanding the Most Common Type of Heart Attack
Coronary heart disease, also called coronary artery disease, is the most common cause of myocardial infarctions. coronary artery disease develops when the arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle (the coronary arteries) become hardened and narrowed due to atherosclerosis.
Myocardial Infarction plaque in a coronary artery ruptures or breaks open, platelets (blood cell fragments) and other substances cause a blood clot to form on the surface of the plaque. This blood clot may then reduce or block blood flow through the coronary artery. If blood flow to part of the heart muscle is reduced sufficiently for long enough, the portion of heart muscle supplied by that vessel begins to die and causes a myocardial infarction.
