The Impact of Audio Visual Systems on Sleep Quality and Circadian Rhythms

Our innate circadian rhythms evolved to align our biological functions with the natural light-dark cycle. However, modern lifestyles involve near-constant exposure to artificial light and screens. This blog explores how ubiquitous audiovisual technologies impact sleep cycles and disrupt circadian rhythms, with health implications. Potential solutions and areas for future research are also discussed.

The Natural Day-Night Cycle

Our bodies have an internal clock centered in the brain's hypothalamus called the circadian pacemaker. It regulates daily fluctuations in body temperature, hormones and alertness levels in sync with daylight hours via light input to the retina. Melatonin release at night signals the brain it's time for sleep, a vital recuperative process.

Effects of Artificial Light Exposure

Electronics emit short-wavelength blue light that most efficiently suppresses nighttime melatonin production when the eyes are exposed in the late evening hours. Delayed circadian adjustment from shift work or jet lag results. Long-term light exposure close to bedtime associates with poorer sleep quality, daytime fatigue, weight gain and mood disorders.
