Understanding Virtual Private Networks and How They Work

A virtual private network, commonly referred to as a VPN, is a network that uses a public infrastructure like the internet to provide users access to private resources and services. VPNs use encryption, authentication, and other security protocols to ensure that only authorized users can access that private network.

VPN service providers maintain a server or group of servers that users can remotely connect to using VPN client software on their computers or mobile devices. When this connection is established, the user's internet traffic is then routed through this server rather than directly accessing the internet. As the user's data passes through the VPN server, it is encrypted and tunneled through the public network to the destination server or website.
