Melt Flow Index Formula: Understanding MFI Calculation

The Melt Flow Index (MFI) formula is used to determine the flow rate of molten plastic under a specific load and temperature. It is calculated as: MFI= T/M where M is the mass of the extruded polymer (in grams) and T is the time (in minutes). This test helps manufacturers assess the viscosity and processability of plastic materials. A higher MFI indicates lower viscosity and better flow, whereas a lower MFI suggests higher viscosity and strength. Understanding the MFI formula is crucial for selecting the right plastic for injection molding, extrusion, and other applications.
