Thorium Reactors: A Promising Alternative Nuclear Energy Source

Thorium is a slightly radioactive metallic chemical element with symbol Th and atomic number 90. It was discovered in 1828 and named after Thor, the Scandinavian god of thunder. Thorium is moderatively abundant in the Earth's crust and is about three times more abundant than uranium. When thorium is irradiated in a nuclear reactor, it can be transmuted into the fissile isotope uranium-233, which is fissile like the natural isotope uranium-235.

Thorium has significant potential advantages as a sustainable nuclear fuel. However, overcoming the technological challenges to demonstrate full-scale thorium molten salt or other advanced reactor designs will take time and resources.
