GLUCAGON LIKE PEPETIDE: KEY ROLE IN HEALTHCARE INDUSTRY

Understanding GLP-1 Mechanism

Glucagon like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is an incretin hormone released after eating from L cells mainly located in the intestines. Incretins are hormones released from the gastrointestinal tract that stimulate release of insulin from the pancreas in response to meals. GLP-1 acts as the major incretin in the body and plays an important role in regulating blood glucose levels after eating. When food is consumed, GLP-1 is released which triggers the pancreas to secrete insulin which helps transport glucose from the bloodstream into body cells where it can be used for energy.
At the same time, GLP-1 suppresses secretion of glucagon which prevents the liver from releasing excess glucose into the bloodstream.
