Origins of Cider Making
Cider has been produced for thousands of years across many different cultures around the world. Some of the earliest evidence of cider production comes from ancient Mesopotamia in the 3rd millennium BC. Cider making eventually spread throughout Europe as apple cultivation expanded. In England during the Roman occupation beginning in 43 AD, cider production increased significantly as the Romans brought grafting techniques which improved English apple varieties. By the medieval period, cider had become deeply ingrained in English culture and was commonly consumed on a daily basis. The tradition of cider making was eventually carried to North America by English settlers in the 17th century.
