Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and arachidonic acid (ARA) are two types of polyunsaturated fatty acids that are essential for proper development in infants and young children. Both DHA and ARA cannot be synthesized by the human body and must be obtained through diet. Traditionally, breast milk has been the best source of these fatty acids for infants. However, for infants who cannot be breastfed or who are weaned early, dietary supplements containing algal-sourced DHA and ARA play an important role.
