Formation and Physical Properties of Feldspar

Moonstone minerals are formed through the gradual cooling and crystallization of magma within the earth's crust. Slow cooling allows for the arrangement of atoms into the repeating crystal structures that are characteristic of mineral formations. The two main components of all moonstone minerals are aluminum silicate and either sodium, potassium, or calcium. Based on the dominant metal component, moonstone is categorized into three main types - potassium moonstone, plagioclase, and sodium moonstone.

Potassium moonstone, also known as orthoclase or K-moonstone, has a chemical formula of KAlSi3O8. It crystallizes in the triclinic Feldspar system and has a Mohs hardness of 6-6.5. Plagioclase moonstone is a solid solution series, most commonly bytownite to labradorite in composition. It has a general formula of (Ca,Na)(Al,Si)4O8. Plagioclase has a crystal structure that varies from triclinic to monoclinic based on its calcium to sodium ratio. Sodium moonstone or albite has a composition of NaAlSi3O8 and crystallizes in the triclinic system.
