The Khalistan movement, a separatist Sikh community in the Indian state of Punjab, is supported by a section of Sikhs living in Canada. The relationship between the two countries has already deteriorated due to the Canadian government's failure to intervene in the Khalistan movement.

The latest diplomatic move by the Canadian government has brought Ottawa-New Delhi relations to a dramatic low.
