Role of Hollow Fiber Filtration in Biopharmaceutical Manufacturing
Hollow Fiber Filtration is a membrane filtration process where many porous hollow fibers are bundled together in a cylindrical array to separate particles and molecules from a solution. Hollow fiber filters have been used for decades in many industries such as biopharmaceutical processing, food and dairy production, and water treatment. The basic principle of Hollow Fiber Filtration involves fluid flowing along the outside of porous hollow fibers while air or liquid is pulled through the lumen or hollow inside of the fibers using a vacuum. Contaminants and suspended particles that are too large to pass through the fiber pores are retained on the outside of the fibers. The filtrate or permeate that passes through is collected from the inside of the fibers and exits through the headers that connect the fibers.
