What is a concussion?
A concussion is a brain injury that alters the way the brain functions. It is caused by a blow or jolt to the head or body that causes the head and brain to move quickly back and forth. Forces that can cause a concussion include a fall or the head hitting an object.
Signs and symptoms
Concussion cannot be seen on x-rays or CT scans. However, signs and symptoms of a concussion can include:
- Headache or a feeling of pressure in the head
- Nausea or vomiting
- Balance problems or dizziness
- Double or fuzzy vision
- Sensitivity to light or noise
- Feeling sluggish, foggy or groggy
- Changes in sleep patterns
- Confusion or feeling slowed down
- Difficulty with concentration and attention
- Irritability and emotional changes
- Less responsive than usual
