Cephalosporin drugs were first discovered in the 1940s and were derived from the fungal genus Cephalosporium. TheCephalosporium strain was isolated by Italian scientist Giuseppe Brotzu from a Sardinian patent with severe burns. Brotzu noticed that the patient recovered due to infection by the fungus. This led Italian scientist Bartolomeo Gazzola to study the fungus further and he discovered that it produced substances that had antibacterial properties. In 1948, British scientists Elizabeth Lee and Edward Abraham isolated the active substance they called cephalosporin C from Cephalosporium acremonium.
