Cosmetics declined for some time due to the influence of the Christian church which associated make-up with vanity and sensuality. However, by the late medieval era, cosmetics gained popularity again. Wealthy women would use cosmetics to enhance their natural beauty. In 1550, there were the first recorded male cosmetics which wealthy men used to cover facial hair and imperfections. Lip color also became popular during this time made from crushed mulberries, pressed berries and gum. Herbals and ancient formulas were some of the main sources of skin care knowledge which led to advancements in products like moisturizers and cleansers.
