Understanding Breast Implants
Breast Implants are typically inserted through an incision made in one of three incision sites: under the arm (axillary), around the lower portion of the areola (periareolar), or in the breast crease (inframammary). The surgeon will first create a pocket for the implant either directly behind the breast tissue or underneath the chest muscle (submuscular placement). The saline or silicone gel implant is then inserted and positioned. Saline implants can be inserted empty and filled after placement. The incision is closed with dissolvable or non-dissolvable sutures depending on the location. Insertion is usually performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. Recovery time takes 1-2 weeks with limited physical activity.
