"Lee Min-woo's cutter has gotten better"...the secret behind Hanwha's second consecutive win
The Hanwha Eagles ended the week on a high note.
Hanwha won its eighth game of the 2024 Shinhan SOL Bank KBO League 2024 against SSG Landers at SSG Landers Field in Incheon on Friday, 4-2 in extra innings to extend its winning streak to two games. For the second consecutive day, Hanwha won a two-run game and stayed focused until the end.
With the win, eighth-ranked Hanwha improved its season record to 21-1-29 (.420), maintaining a 1.5-game gap over seventh-ranked KT Wiz and keeping its hopes of a mid-table finish alive. At the same time, it was the second consecutive winning series in more than two months, after winning three or more games against SSG in Munhak on March 26-28 and KT Wiz in Daejeon on March 29-31. Hanwha went 2-1 against the LG Twins in Daejeon on March 21-23 and collected two wins against SSG on March 24-25.
"I think the team's scoring power has increased the most because the hitters like Noh Si-hwan, Ahn Chi-hong, and Chae Eun-sung have improved their hitting," Hanwha coach Choi Won-ho said before the team's ninth game of the season against SSG was canceled due to rain on the 26th. "Also, the bullpen has been doing a good job in tight (low-scoring) situations lately, so I think our performance has improved a little.
Among other players, the manager mentioned Lee Min-woo. Lee has a 2.31 ERA in 26 games, 23 1/3 innings, one win, five holds, and one save this season, and is cruising with a 0.87 ERA in 10 games, 10 1/3 innings, and one win in May.
Choi said, "Lee Min-woo has been pitching a lot in big moments in front of (closer) Joo Hyun-sung, and he's been pitching well every time he's been in the game. He's playing the biggest role in the bullpen right now," Choi said in praise of Lee Min-woo.
"It seems like hitters are missing his cutter. His curve was always good," he said. "I think he gained confidence as he got more and more appearances. In many ways, I think he's been pitching well so far," he added.
Meanwhile, after taking a break due to the rain, Hanwha will have until the 27th to catch their breath before starting a three-game midweek series against the Lotte Giants at the Daejeon Hwasung Life Eagles Park on the 28th. They will then travel to Daegu for a three-game weekend series against the Samsung Lions starting on the 31st.
