Because the excrement from a colostomy is generally rather hard, a 'sealed' or non-drainable colostomy pouch is inserted. Once or twice a day, or as needed, the bag is scrapped and replaced with a fresh one. However, the consistency of waste matter discharged via a stoma varies depending on the site of the colostomy in the intestine. Some patients wear drainable stoma bags that are closed shut at the bottom if the feces is particularly fluid (and hence in bigger volumes).
