Piles, also known as Hemorrhoids, are characterized by swollen veins at the vascular structure in the anal canal and rectum.

Types of Piles/Hemorrhoids
Internal Hemorrhoids: Originate above the dentate line (bright red bleeding, painless)
External Hemorrhoids are the vascular complexes underlying the richly innervated anoderm (distal to the dentate line).
Grades of Internal Hemorrhoids
Grade l: During bowel motions, internal hemorrhoid bulges into the anal canal. (passing motions).
Grade ll: Internal hemorrhoid bulges from the anus while passing stools, then returns to the anus independently.
Grade lll: During bowel movements, an internal hemorrhoid bulges from the anus and must be pushed back in with a finger. (by patient/surgeon).
Grade lV: Internal hemorrhoid constantly protrudes from the anus and cannot be decreased back into the anal canal.
