Law and Legacy: The Role of Deuteronomy’s 200 Commandments in Biblical and Modern Ethics

The Book of Deuteronomy, meaning “second law,” is a foundational biblical text that reaffirms and expands upon the laws given to Israel. Presented as Moses’ final address before the Israelites enter the Promised Land, Deuteronomy structures its message through historical review, moral exhortation, and detailed legal instruction.

Key components include the repetition of the Ten Commandments, regulations for worship and festivals, social justice mandates, and laws concerning family, warfare, and public health. These laws emphasize justice, compassion, responsibility, and reverence for God.

In Jewish tradition, these laws form part of the broader Halakhah and are deeply explored in rabbinic literature. Christianity views many of these laws through the teachings of Jesus, who emphasized love for God and neighbor while seeing ceremonial laws as fulfilled through his ministry.

Deuteronomy’s laws remain ethically and socially relevant, influencing modern justice systems and moral frameworks. They reflect a covenantal vision for a holy, compassionate society, underscoring the enduring significance of biblical law in shaping both religious and secular values.
