Understanding the Working of Sonobuoys in Naval Operations

Sonobuoys are acoustic sensors used by the navies worldwide to detect underwater sounds, including those made by submarines. They employ hydrophones, which are underwater microphones designed to detect vibration and sound waves in water such as noises generated by ships, torpedoes and other marine life. Sonobuoys are deployed from aircraft or ships using pneumatic launch tubes or rockets. Once in water, a small parachute helps the sonobuoy float and stabilizes it. It then transmits the acoustic data such as sounds originating from underwater via radio signals to the airplane or ship launching it.
