Digital Biomarkers: A New Frontier in Disease Diagnosis and Monitoring

What are Digital Biomarkers?

Quantifiable physiological use data from digital devices and sensors to objectively measure and evaluate both normal and pathophysiological biological processes. They reflect the effect of diseases or medical conditions and also assess therapeutic interventions. Quantifiable physiological can be derived from various digital sources such as smartphones, wearable devices, medical devices, and information systems. Some examples include smartphone typing patterns, sleep monitoring data from fitness trackers, voice analyses from smart microphones, and mobile health app interactions.

Smartphones: Smartphones contain a wealth of digital data about an individual's behavior, physiology, and environment. Mobile apps and sensors in phones like the accelerometer, gyroscope, microphone, and Global Positioning System (GPS) generate digital traces that can serve as proxies for many medical conditions. For example, changes in typing patterns analyzed using machine learning from SMS or email can indicate cognitive changes in conditions like Alzheimer's disease or depression.
