Agricultural Pheromone: A Sustainable Approach for Crop Protection

Pheromones are chemical signals produced and released by insects to communicate with other members of the same species. They play an important role in attracting mates, marking territories, defending against predators, and assisting social behaviors like foraging and fighting. In agriculture, pheromones can be used to disrupt mating cycles of pest insects and control infestations. By replicating the natural pheromones emitted by female moths and beetles, males can be confused or drawn away from crops, preventing further reproduction. This is known as mating disruption.

Many growers now employ pheromone dispensers and lures as a key component of integrated pest management (IPM) programs. Dispensers slowly release synthetic versions of sex pheromones over extended periods, saturating orchards and fields. This makes it difficult for male moths to locate calling females
