Antibodies: Nature's Defence Mechanism Against Foreign Invaders
What Are Antibodies?
Antibodies, also known as immunoglobulins, are Y-shaped proteins produced by plasma cells that are part of the immune system. When pathogens such as bacteria or viruses enter the body, the immune system deploys antibodies to recognize and neutralize these foreign invaders.
Antibodies have a remarkable structure that allows them to identify and latch on to specific antigens. Each antibody is composed of four polypeptide chains, two heavy chains and two light chains connected by disulfide bonds. The heavy and light chains each contain a variable region which is unique for each antibody.
