Fusion Biopsy: The Future of Prostate Cancer Diagnosis

Traditional prostate biopsies have limitations in detecting prostate cancer. Fusion biopsy utilizes real-time, 3D ultrasound imaging techniques combined with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to better target suspicious areas. This fusion of imaging modalities aids physicians in pinpointing tumors that may otherwise go undetected.

A patient first undergoes an endorectal coil MRI to identify possible prostate tumors. The MRI images are then loaded into ultrasound imaging software. Fusion Biopsy allows the ultrasound visuals to be fused or aligned in real time with the previously captured MRI scans. During the biopsy, the radiologist uses the fused images for guidance. Biopsy needles are targeted precisely at lesions highlighted on the MRI.
