Ear Health Across Borders: Improving Care for All Communities
Middle ear infections, also known as otitis media, place a massive disease burden on young children globally. Ear Health is estimated that over 588 million people under the age of 5 suffer from otitis media each year worldwide. Rates are highest in developing countries, especially in areas with crowded living conditions and high rates of air pollution. Untreated otitis media can lead to permanent hearing damage or other complications. Vaccines for pneumococcal disease and H. influenza have reduced rates in some countries but access in low-income areas remains limited. More research is still needed on prevention methods appropriate for all global contexts.
