Brachytherapy: A Targeted Radiation Therapy for Cancer Treatment

What is Brachytherapy?
Brachytherapy, also known as internal radiation therapy, is a type of radiation treatment where a radioactive source is placed directly inside or next to the area that needs treatment. This close proximity allows for a highly targeted dose of radiation to reach the tumor while minimizing exposure to nearby healthy tissues. There are two main types of brachytherapy - temporary and permanent.

With temporary Brachytherapy, also called low-dose-rate (LDR) brachytherapy, radioactive sources are carefully placed inside the body in catheters, tubes, seeds or ribbons and left in place for a specific amount of time. Common sites for temporary brachytherapy include cervical, prostate, breast, and endometrial cancers.
