The protea is a diverse family of flowering plants found primarily in South Africa. There are over 1,400 different species of protea classified under 79 genera. Most proteas are characterized by distinctive cone-like flowerheads surrounded by large colorful bracts. However, one unique group of proteas thrives in particularly alkaline soils - the alkaline proteas.
Alkaline proteas belong to one of three genera - Leucospermum, Leucadendron, or Serruria. They tend to be shrub-like in structure, growing up to 3 meters tall. Leaves are usually stiff, leathery and needle-like to combat extreme soil conditions. Flowers range in color from cream to yellow to salmon-pink and are held in typical protea capitulum flowerheads.
