Using Animal Models for Drug Testing: The Role of In Vivo Contract Research Organizations

As the biopharmaceutical industry has grown more complex, the need for specialized contract research organizations (CROs) to assist with drug development has increased significantly. One important area where CRO support is crucial is preclinical or nonclinical testing, which involves evaluating drug candidates using animal models prior to human clinical trials. Historically, most pharmaceutical companies conducted these animal studies internally. However, the highly regulated nature of preclinical testing and the large investments required made outsourcing more appealing. In vivo CROs emerged to fulfill this need, leveraging dedicated facilities, specialized personnel, and extensive experience conducting the tests necessary to advance new molecules into clinical development.
