Mechanical Joints Understanding the Importance of Bolts

Brief History of the Bolt
The earliest predecessors of the bolt date back to ancient times in the form of wooden pegs. With the emergence of metalworking during antiquity, threaded bolts and studs were introduced as more permanent fasteners. However, mass manufacturing of bolted joints only became possible during the Industrial Revolution in the late 18th century with the development of standardized bolt sizes, threading technology and power tools. Today, Bolts are ubiquitous fasteners that hold together everything from airplanes and automobiles to buildings and machinery.

Components of a Bolt
The key components of a bolt are its head, shank or body, and threads. The head helps maintain a tight joint by providing a surface for turning with a tool like a spanner wrench or socket. It comes in various common head styles like hex, square, binding or round.
