Why Stretch With Pre-Primed Canvas?

Artists use gesso on canvas or on wood panels to create a smooth, even surface, that the paint can adhere to. A barrier on the surface of canvas prevents the paint from soaking into the fibers of the canvas which can cause deterioration over time.
