High Density Polyethylene (HDPE): Versatile and Durable Plastic Polymer

High density polyethylene (HDPE) is a thermoplastic polymer produced from the monomer ethylene. It is commonly recognized by its chemical formula, -(C2H4)n-. HDPE is popular for its strength and durability properties which make it suitable for a wide range of applications.

High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) Chemical and Physical Properties

HDPE is a very chemically inert material that is highly resistant to corrosion from most chemicals. It does not normally react with acids, bases, solvents, or other common chemicals. This makes HDPE an excellent choice for applications involving chemical containment or distribution.

Physically, High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) is a semi-crystalline plastic with a high melting point of around 130°C. Its density is between 0.94-0.97 g/cm3, making it denser than low density polyethylene (LDPE) but still lighter than other plastics like polypropylene. HDPE is highly impact resistant and has excellent water barrier properties. It is opaque and has very good electrical insulation characteristics.
