What's wrong with blowing lanterns?
Lanterns are basically small size hot air balloons. Due to its light mass, a lantern can fly for up to 20 minutes at a maximum altitude of 3,000 feet until the fire is extinguished. The burning soles of the lantern help it fly. But the fire is not extinguished as soon as it falls to the ground. As a result, lanterns can come in contact with flammable materials in plants or land and cause fire.
In 2013, it took three days to extinguish a fire from lanterns at the Smethwick Plastic Recycling Plant in the UK. Last year, a total of 10 houses, including Dhanmondi, Rayerbagh in Dhaka, caught fire from lanterns on the roof and road wires.
Lantern fires in plant and animal sanctuaries can cause extensive damage to biodiversity. Many birds flying in the sky were trapped in the wire and bamboo frame used to make the lantern structure. As well as many lanterns together pollute the light in the night sky, which causes serious harm to birds.
In New Year's celebrations, say no to fireworks and lanterns!
