At its core, rubber-based ink is an emulsion similar to paint. Fine polymer particles carrying color pigments are suspended in water. When applied to paper through an inkjet printhead, the water component is absorbed into the paper fibers while the polymer particles containing pigments are deposited on the surface.

As the water evaporates, the polymers coalesce and interact with each other through physical and chemical bonds to form a continuous film. Latex Ink film traps the color pigments on the paper surface rather than allowing them to penetrate deep inside like dye inks. The end result is a printed document with crisp, colorfast images that are resistant to water and smearing.
