The most common ethyl alcohol source is corn in the United States and sugarcane in Brazil. Cellulosic biomass including agricultural residue and waste wood are also being developed as promising next-generation feedstocks.

The production of ethyl alcohol typically involves four basic steps: feedstock collection, pretreatment, enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation. First, the chosen feedstock like corn or sugarcane is collected and transported to ethanol plants. Then it undergoes various pretreatment processes to break down the cellulose and expose it for further processing
