Global Absinthe: Origins of the Green Fairy

Absinthe first emerged in the late 18th century in Switzerland, but it was in 19th century France that it truly came into its own. Developed by Dr. Pierre Ordinaire as a medicinal elixir, absinthe differed from past wormwood-based drinks in its high alcohol content and use of grand wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) as a primary flavoring. By the mid-1800s, absinthe had become immensely popular in France and was embraced by artists and intellectuals of the time as a symbol of bohemian culture.

However, its rise was matched by growing societal fears over its effects, particularly in combination with alcohol. Prohibitions began in certain countries in the early 1900s and by the 1920s absinthe was banned throughout most of Europe and North America.
