Understanding the Heart Failure Drug Telmisartan

Understanding the Heart Failure Drug Telmisartan

Micardis is a drug used primarily in the treatment of hypertension or high blood pressure. It works by blocking the effects of angiotensin II, a hormone in the body that causes blood vessels to narrow and tension to increase. By blocking this hormone, Micardis helps relax blood vessels and lower blood pressure.

Micardis was first approved for medical use in 1998 and is sold under the brand name Micardis among others. It belongs to a class of medications known as angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) which work via the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) in the body. Other ARBs include losartan, valsartan, irbesartan and candesartan.

Understanding Telmisartan: An Angiotensin II Receptor Blocker

Micardis is a type of medication known as an angiotensin II receptor blocker, or ARB for short. ARBs work by blocking the effects of a compound in the body called angiotensin II. Angiotensin II causes arteries to narrow and tighten. By blocking its effects, ARBs help relax blood vessels so blood can flow more easily. Micardis specifically is used to treat high blood pressure and help reduce the risk of cardiovascular events like heart attacks and strokes in certain patients.

The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, also called the RAAS system, plays an important role in regulating blood pressure. When blood pressure drops, the kidneys release renin which triggers production of angiotensin I and later angiotensin II. Angiotensin II causes arteries to constrict and promotes water retention by the kidneys. This helps raise blood pressure back to normal levels.
