Protecting Your Herd: Bovine Respiratory Disease Treatment Strategies

Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is a leading cause of illness and death in cattle. The disease is actually a syndrome caused by a combination of viruses and bacteria that infect the respiratory tract. Bacteria such as Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, and Histophilus somni are often secondary invaders that worsen the respiratory disease following viral infection. Calves are at highest risk for BRD in the first few months after weaning or arrival at stocker/feedlot facilities due to the stress of marketing, comingling, and changes in diet and environment. Other risk factors include inadequate passive transfer of immunity from colostrum, overcrowding, and harsh weather conditions. Prompt treatment is important to prevent mortality from BRD.
