Erythromycin: A Widely Used Macrolide Antibiotic

History of Erythromycin

Erythromycin was first isolated from cultures of the actinobacterium Saccharopolyspora erythraea (formerly Streptomyces erythreus) in 1952 by a Greek-American microbiologist named Abelardo A. Broth. Initial work by Brock led to the discovery that the active substance he had isolated had antibacterial properties. Further research and development resulted in the introduction of erythromycin as a clinically useful antibiotic in the 1950s. It was one of the first commercially produced semi-synthetic antibiotics.
