The Emerging Trend of Agrivoltaics in Commercial Farming
As the need to adopt more sustainable practices in agriculture increases, agrivoltaic systems have emerged as a promising solution. These dual-use facilities allow for the combined generation of solar power and agricultural production on the same land. While conventional solar farms occupy vast tracts of farmland, removing them from food production, agrivoltaics help optimize land use for both energy production and agriculture.

Optimizing Water Use Through Agrivoltaics

In water-scarce regions, Agrivoltaic systems can optimize the use of groundwater and precipitation resources. Studies show that the solar panels help retain a significant portion of rainfall which is then absorbed into the soil slowly over time through percolation. This regulated supply of moisture to crops reduces evaporation losses compared to open fields. With efficient water utilization, farmers can cultivate more crops from the same water source.

The shade from overhead solar panels also lowers transpiration rates from both plants and soil. Researchers have measured water savings of up to 70% for certain crops grown below panels. This regulated microclimate prevents waterlogging of fields during heavy rainfall, avoiding damage to crops. With dual use of fields, agricultural outputs are maintained while reducing the overall water footprint of food and energy production.
